I just saw the new Pixar movie “Brave” with my 9-year old daughter. In it, the young Princess has to decide whether to live her truth or live for the expectations of her parents and her role as a princess. We really enjoyed the whole movie, but the part that really hit me was the last line.
It went something like “Our fate lies within us … you only have to be brave enough to see it.” I’d alter it a little to say “Our calling lies within us … you only have to be brave enough to claim it.”
Many of us *see* or at least sense our calling. Others are too clouded to even see it. But the bravery doesn’t come in seeing it. The bravery comes in *following* it when you do.
Those of us who know our calling can spend years, decades, a lifetime running away from it because we fear it’s pull. We fear the power it may give us. We fear the outcome if we try and fail. We fear the impact going for our dreams might have on the life and relationships we have now. So we down-shift to a more secure path … a more certain future.
It took me 19 years to fully embrace my calling. Did I know all that time the exact shape it would take once I did? No. But could I have started taking baby steps along the path way back when and have alleviated a lot of struggle, a lot of frustration, a lot of confusion, a lot of suffering? Yes.
That’s why I‘m so passionate about helping others to discover and fulfill their soul’s calling. It’s already in you … whether you know it or not. You have as much potential today as you did on the day you were born as you will the day you die. Your potential is already within you. It’s what you do with that potential that shapes your experience of life.
So will you take that brave step to *claim* your calling or will you sit on the sidelines waiting for the right time, the right circumstances, the right feeling that you are *ready*? The choice, as always, is yours.
